Algebra Puzzle 2

This is actually easier than the 3x3 :)

Algebra Puzzle

Let's say that p=Pumpkin, u=Umbrella and a=Apple.
p+u+p=45
u+u+p=36
a+a+a=9
9÷3=3
a=3
p+u+a=30
u+u+a=21
p+p+a=39
p+p+a-a=39-3
=36
p+p=36
p=36÷2
=18
u+u+p-p=36-18
=18
u+u=18
u=18÷2
=9

Hence,
a=3
p=18
u=9

Pumpkin Pie

The crumbly batter broke down beautifully in my mouth,the warm buttery paste spreading out over my tingling mouth. Spices wafted into my nose,warming it up in a second. The differentiated spices danced merrily in my mouth,and the familiar bursts of pumpkin settled in. In a moment,everything was gone.

Prime Factorisation (continues...)

#25
2^4 X 3^5 X 7^2 X 11=2X2X2X2X3X3X3X3X3X7X7X11=2095632
Since the number ends with an even number, it should be divisable by 2.
First,I would divide in by 2. The answer would be 1047816.
2X1047816=2095632
1047816 would be a factor which is greater than 100.
It can also be divided by 4.
4X523908=2095632
It can also be divided by 6.
6X349272=2095632
The final answer-1047816,523908,349272.

#26
2 X 3^2 X 7^3 X 13=80262
3 X 7^2 X 13^3 X 17=5490303
The HCF of this two numbers is 1911.
From the working, I can find out that 7 and 13 are also common factors.
The final answer is-1911,7,13.

Goldbalch's Conjuncture

Yes. According to the Goldbalch's theory, every even number greater than two can be expressed as a sum of two primes. For example...
4=2+2
6=3+3
8=5+3
and so on...
Besides that, any even number more than 5 can be written as a sum of three primes. This magical equation is one of the oldest unsolved problems in number theory.

Environment

The environment is the social and cultural conditions that affects nature. It is something that is dynamic and ever-changing,never stagnant. Humans shape the environment, bringing it to an entirely different level. It is a setting that can be changed into all forms, may it be good or bad. Hence, we should all be careful about our actions, which would have a great impact on the environment that we live in.

12 January: Numbers as a Language

After finding information from a few sites, I decided to nominate the Roman Numerals to represent 2010. I find it very unique as it is based on the letters of the alphabet and it doesn't include the number zero. To me, zero means "unsuccessful". 2010 should be a successful year for everyone and the process to success would be very unique, due to the applied learning at SST. :)

COMMUNICATION

1 Why is communication important?

It helps us stay connected to the world. Through communication, you’ll be able to learn amazing things that you’ve never thought of before. Besides that, it also makes life easier as everyone will understand you.

2 What is/are your favourite form/s of communication? Why?

I prefer communicating with others just by talking. While doing so, you can find out from the voice how that person is feeling. I also find it more comfortable and assuring when I get to hear the voice of others. It would be even better if we could meet up for discussions.

3 How do you decide which form of communication to use in a situation?

If you want to share something with everyone in the world, communicating by online social networks would be the best option. These networks are extremely popular,especially with the younger generation. Hence it would be spread widely.

4 What difficulties do you face in communicating with others?

Some people are difficult to communicate with and don’t respect other’s ideas. When faced with such people, communication becomes a very difficult thing.

STORY

Hehe... Very bored so I decided to post a story that I had created.Enjoy!

Prologue
I sprawled messily on the earthy ground,clutching the necklace in my hand with all my might.My body ached in fatigue, my mind a whirl of confusion.The sound of the thumping hooves of the horses was getting louder. I knew that they were coming...

CHAPTER ONE
Casty is my name,and I used to live a normal and typical life.Staying in the countryside,I did not have many friends and eventually turned to fantasy for entertainment. My entire life revolves around daydreaming...once my greatest companion. Such a good friend of mine had became a foe, and I deeply regretted my actions. Never did it ocour to me at that point of time, that it would betray and go against me.

I found the necklace while feeding the ducks, with their heads bobbing up and down so adorably.It was under a rough granite rock,with edges so rough that even looking at it would hurt. It seemed to have a mysterious aura,luring me towards it. Never did I know that my discovery would be the first step to the danger that awaits,a danger that was deadly,but difficult to sense. It was just like the process of death-a slow pprocess that we would hardly take note of,untill it arives...

The necklace was magnificent,even when it was smudged with grime. There was something special about it,and it seemed so much like an object only found in a fairy tale world. Actually, the necklace itself was not that impressive,for it was just a few pieces of string bonded to each other. Instead, it was the presence of the precious stone, which makes it stand out. The feeling that it gives was more brillant than a candle in a pitch dark cave, and it amazed me. It was incredable what it could change. The stone. I found out, was an unpolished sapphire,quite a big one indeed. There was an intangible sense of mystery about it,something that intrudges me,something that arouses my curiosity. There was a strange and palpable bond between us,similar to a bond that links a long lost relative and oneself.

I gripped it hard in my hand,savoring every minute,feeling the cool hard surface of the precious stone. Yellow and orange leaves swirled down from the beech tree behind me and danced around me as I walked away.

"Mum, I am going out again!" I shouted, barely hearing my own vopice over the blaring music that was coming from the radio. Rushing out before Mother could decline to my request,I sighed. The precious stone in my hand felt cool to the touch,relieving me from the heat of the golden rays that was coming from the merciless sun. Such weather was unexpected,for it was the middle of autumn. However,I missed the welcoming sunh very much,with its arms carassing me whenever I was within its reach. Thinking about that,a smile broke across my face. "Surely nothing can dampen my spirits today!" I exclaimed. Later, I found out that I was terribly wrong... TO BE CONTINUED

Macroons

I am a big fan of macroons. This dessert is actually a combination of a unique biscuit and a filling of any type. There is a myriad of flavours to choose from. My favourite is the Hazelnut macroon. Biting into it,you will find out about the crunch that it gives,and the wonderful flavors hidden within would start to come out. The delicate flavour would amaze you,and give you one of the best culinary experience in our life. The hazelnut filling is amazing,and would satisfy your taste buds immediately. Adding small pieces of fruit into it would just enhance the flavour,and give you a richer and more exciting taste. Trust me and try one! You will not be disappointed.

IMPORTANT!

Do you know that the chocolate that we're eating might not be classified as "real" chocolate?

The standard bar of milk choccolate should contain at least 25% of dry cocoa solids and a fine one should have at least 30%.

The standard bar of dark chocolate should contain at least 35% of dry cocoa solids and a fine one should have at least 45%.

Check the amount next time before you bite into your favourite chocolate!

Another thing to note- Check the ingredients and see if the chocolate contains Vanilla or Vanillin.

Vanillin is a cheap subsitute for vanilla and its not natural. Avoid taking chocolate that contains vegetable oil instead of cocoa butter too.

Remember, chocolate isnt just chocolate.Every chocolate experience is different and exiting, with bursts of flavour of every kind.

Quality chocolate should NOT smell of vanilla

For a fulfiling chocolate experience, i reccomend Valrhona!:)

Day 3 Reflections

  • What do I understand about the school value "Expanding Our Learning Networks"?

It is about building good relations with the world and working well with them. Learning can take place anywhere and anytime, and there’s no stop to it. Hence, in order to get more learning opportunities, we’ll have to connect with the world and grasp the chance to learn. This also means more outdoor activities and communication with the community.

  • Why is this value important and how will it help me in my learning experience in SST?

SST aims to develop their pupils to be connected globally. Hence this value is extremely important in order to achieve that. We would first have to expand our learning networks before we can be connected to the entire world. It would also help us to learn a lot more and we would have an enriching journey towards our goal.

REFLECTIONS

While walking across the HDB estates that are located in the Clementi neighborhood, I found out that there were many senior citizens sitting at the void deck SMOKING. Smoking is a bad habit and is harmful to your health. It increases the risk of lung cancer and puts your life in danger. Furthermore, they have already reached an age when their bodies would start to become frail. I think that we should organize a talk to educate the citizens about the harmful consequences of smoking. This could help them to walk out of their “smoky” life. :)

Day 2 Reflections

What do I understand about the school value "Forging Excellence"?

Personally, I think that it is all about achieving what you want and striving to do your best for everything. To most students, “excellence” would probably be linked to studies and getting good marks. Actually,this isn’t everything. If you try your best in everything, you have already excelled in life. I guess this is what the school is trying to tell us.

What are the strengths that I think I possessed which can help me to achieve excellence?

Well, I’m not someone who gives up easily and that is one of the key factors that you’ll have to take in mind in order to achieve excellence. Beside that, I don’t think that I have any strengths that can help me in that path.

What other attributes and attitudes do I think I should cultivate to excel in the things I do?

I think I should try to be more diligent in my work. Being hardworking is crucial in achieving your goals. As I’m a little on the lazy side, I guess I’ll have to change that bad attitude of mine.

How can I contribute to help my class succeed?

I can try to do my best in whatever task assigned to me and make sure that I complete it on time. Furthermore, I’ll not get into trouble and land the whole class in deep soup.

REFLECTIONS

How do I feel about working in a team on the bridge building project

  • The project serves as an ice breaker as well as a way to expand our knowledge. Though we had our share of troubles, we completed our project quite smoothly and produced an end product that we all could be proud of. I feel that working in a team is much more different than working by your own.When you work in a team, respect and responsibility are crucial factors in order for you to complete the given job. These are the things that I'll have to work on...

What do I think about your interactions with the members in your team?

  • Everything was fine and we interacted quite a lot. There were times when there were disagreements but we worked everything out by discussing it and finding the best way to construct the bridge. Everyone in the group contributed and voiced out their opinions politely. In conclusion,I find it quite a pleasure working with them.
  • What have I learnt about myself in the course of the activity and what would you have done differently in future group activities?
  • Post this activity, I found out that I enjoyed working in groups. Previously, I had worked in teams but everyone basically kept to themselves and did their own thing. However, my experience was different this time. Everyone played a part and worked together to complete the task successfully. I would try to interact more with others the next time we have such an activity and would also do things in a more systematic way.
  • Did I experience any fear(s), discomfort(s) and apprehension(s) working with this team? Why?
  • I didn't face much challenges in this activity though I felt irritated by how the way we worked at the beginning. Everyone was researching their own thing and we did not really interact. Though, as we started to familiarize with each other, things turned for the better.
  • How do I overcome them?
  • The problem was solved naturally after we got to know each other.
